MBJJF official representative of GAMMA in Mauritius

Mauritius Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (MBJJF) is the representative of GAMMA in Mauritius. The scope of GAMMA is to support MBJJF in the development of MMA in Mauritius. The gentle art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) plays a major role in the sport of mixed martial arts. Various fighters who come from BJJ backgrounds have found immense success in the cage.

A lot of BJJ stars have transitioned to MMA and have even become champions. It all started when the legendary Royce Gracie BJJ practitioner surprised audiences by not only defeating men much bigger than he was, but doing so in a manner that was perplexing to many, featuring a highly-technical style of fighting.

Based on this the MBJJF the governing body of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Mauritius has found it judicious to be the representative of GAMMA to promote MMA in Mauritius.

With the collaboration of other Martial Art coaches in Kickboxing, Judo, Muay Thai and Boxing MBJJF is offering a quality training program to their members.

What is Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)?
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full-contact combat sport that uses different techniques from other combat sports, such as Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Kickboxing, Boxing and other martial arts, to compete against another opponent of equal weight.

The athletes usually fight in a ring or a fenced area. The fenced area can be round or have at least six sides, and the generic term used for the fenced area is called a Circle.

MMA allows opponents to strike and grapple, both standing and while on the ground. Techniques that are commonly used while standing are striking, clinching and takedowns. Grappling and submission holds are usually performed while on the ground.

Match Format
Matches are usually three rounds lasting five minutes each, with one minute of rest between rounds.

Championship Matches are usually five rounds lasting five minutes each, with one minute of rest between rounds.

For GAMMA-held events, athletes compete for three rounds lasting three minutes each, with one minute of rest between rounds.

Weight Categories
In order to reduce the competitive advantage a much larger opponent will have on a smaller opponent because of their size, power, and weight, athletes are categorized into one of the nine different weight categories for men, and seven different weight categories for women. This helps to ensure that athletes are given a fair fight.

Trying Out MMA For The First Time

Mixed Martial Arts is a sport for all – a sport enjoyed by millions of children, youth, and adult participants globally. It is a sport that combines hand-eye coordination, power, strength, speed, and decision-making skills. There is always something new to learn, as it is constantly evolving. MMA is a sport that constantly challenges and pushes participants to their physical and mental limits.

Get involved and try the sport. Share all the health and social benefits of MMA and become part of our global MMA community.

Here are a few ideas to think about when getting started in the sport:

1. Find a local MMA gym, or train at a martial arts school that offers training in Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, Boxing, or Muay Thai.

2. Develop techniques and fighting abilities. There are limited full-contact hits to the body and head at this stage.

3. Participate in amateur MMA fights with full contact, but with participants wearing headgear and shin guards.

Many athletes will train in one martial art for a long time and then transition to MMA. For example, there are many Jiu-Jitsu practitioners that have gotten really good at their art. They then take those skills with them over to MMA. Once they train and are comfortable in MMA, amateur fights can be arranged for them to participate in.
